Set your Vision

“Your “I CAN” is more important than your IQ”

– Robin Sharma

Write down your dream – your vision that you wish to achieve. Believe in your dreams.

Close your eyes and imagine what your ideal life looks like. What are you doing in your imagination? How do you feel? What have you achieved? Are you happy and contended? What does your surrounding look like? People and things around you. That is your Vision of your ideal life.

“The only person you are destined to be, is the person you decide to be”

– Ralph Waldo Emerson

Believe that you can achieve what you want to achieve in your life. Build an attitude of acceptance as you frame your vision. If you do not accept that you can do it, how is anyone else going to believe that you can.

Vision is the bigger picture of your future. It is clear sense of purpose of your life.

Vision is not same as goals. It is bigger than goals. Its culmination of all your goals – career, family, health, financial, spiritual goals and many more.

Action plan : Make a note of what is your vision of life?

Define your Goals

Once you have built  your vision, you break down that vision into goals encompassing all areas of your life. You may make Career goals, business goals, family goals, travel goals, health goals, financial goals, spiritual goals, volunteering goals…. And some more depending on what you want to achieve.

Goals have to be short term and long term. Short term goals are immediate goals for your present life such as daily, weekly and yearly goals. Long term goals are goals to be achieved in more than a year, may be 2 years, 5 years or even 10 years.

The Goals have to be SMART :

  • S – Specific
  • M – Measurable
  • A – Achievable
  • R – Relevant
  • T – Time-bound

“I shall earn 1mn $ within before 2023 by making youtube videos” is a better goal than “I want to become successful youtuber”

Measurable and time-bound goal shall help you keep a track of your progress. You can analytically determine your progress and focus on the strengths of your actions which are really yielding results. And cut out the faf from your process.

“Stop being prisoner of your past, be the architect of your future”

– Robin Sharma

The goals needs not be dependant on your past experience. It has to be focused at your future aim.

The last failure is not the measure of your self worth. You are much more than your success and failures.

Action plan : Are you ready with list of goals which align with your vision? Both your short term and long term goals?

Understand your strength and weakness

Your strength and weaknesses are your personality traits. Your character, your attitude, your habits are your strength or weaknesses.

They exist in you. You can control them or change them.

Action plan : List your strength and weaknesses on paper. Evaluate them. Use your strength to achieve your goals. While you need to make plan of action to overcome your weaknesses.

Recognize the Opportunities and Threats

Opportunities and Threats are outside us. They are part of environment that we live in.

Having an open position in upper level of hierarchy may be an opportunity while having strong competition with contenders to that position is threat.

Having strong financial knowledge is an opportunity while a volatile stock market is a threat.

These opportunities and threats have to be evaluated in line with your goals.

Action plan : Note down how will the opportunities help you to achieve success and how you can overcome the threats.

Set timeline for your goals :

“Don’t be fooled by the calendar. There are only as many days in the year as you make use of. One man gets only a week’s value out of a year while another man gets a full year’s value out of a week.”

– Charles Richards

The importance of setting timeline cannot be put better in any other way. Let timeline for your goals. Breakdown the goals into smaller goals which are achievable and measureable time to time.

So if you want to lose 10kgs of weight this year, you have to set out timeline how much do you wish to lose this month.

Action Plan : Have you set out timeline for your goals? Are you clear what you want to achieve this week, month and year?

Set action plan

Now the real action begins. This is the time to put your imagination into concrete action plan.

“If you talk about it, it’s a dream, if you envision it, it’s possible, but if you schedule it, it’s real”

Tony Robbins

You may use an app, notepad or planner to put down your action plan into paper.  I love bloom daily planner as I feel that writing down goals is about making positive affirmations. As you write down your goals and actions,  you send affirmations to the universe to make it happen.

Break down the goals into smaller doable actions. Smaller actions make it possible to make baby steps towards success.

You can avoid panic or feeling overwhelmed by big goals by setting small bit sized action plans. Its easy to take small actions one at a time. At the end of week, month or year, you will see you have come a long way in your plan.

Action plan : Have you broken down the goal in small baby steps? What will you today today or tomorrow or this week?

Action plan : Did you write down what you need to execute your actions? Do you have everything ready? How long will it take to gather all your resources?

Execute your plan

Start taking action. All of this will work only if you work towards it. Consistency is the key to success.

You may mistakes, you may get off track but do not stop.

Action plan : Keep going. Keep ticking off your action list daily. Everyday.

Measure progress and Review

You remember about steering the boat. That is what is measuring and reviewing progress all about.

Measure your actual progress against your set goals. If there is any deviation, check why.

If you are doing better than you expected, check what  did you do that’s working well. Do that more often.

If you are not doing as good as you planned, check what isn’t working. Change the course of action.

Action plan : Measure your actual progress against your planned milestone. Evaluate the reasons for success or failure and make changes as you go.
