Here starts your journey towards fitness. You have decided to yourself that “Yes, I am going to exercise one hour daily”. So tomorrow you are going to start with walking. Alas, that tomorrow never arrived. You just got busy with your life and work and kids and hundreds of other things in life. Does that sound familiar??? It happens to all of us.
But the good news is that you are here. You are determined to make it happen THIS time. You are ready to do all it takes to make fitness part of your daily routine.
Let me tell you in few easy steps how you can build a successful fitness routine in your daily life. It is fool-proof way of staying focused on track with your fitness goals.
Fitness goals
Why do you want to start fitness routine? Is it for health reasons or you want to have better physique or you want to look good for your cousin’s wedding?
Define your purpose of working out.
You may have short term purpose – may be to look good on a special occasion or enter a 30 days fitness challenge or you want to fit in some dress you recently bought.
You may have long term goal like having fit lifestyle or improving your health parameters.
The purpose of your fitness goal shall decide how serious you are about fitness.
If you have a long term purpose, your chance of sticking to your fitness routine shall be better. With short term purpose, you may be able to achieve fitness goal but you may not sustain it longer.
Have a clear, well-defined purpose of making fitness your lifestyle.
Make a workout plan
Decide what exercises you want to include in your daily plan. Whether you will have days for running or dance or zumba. Add physical activities that you love. Exercising daily has long term health benefits.
Set comfortable and realistic time for workout even if it means working out for 20 to 30 min daily. Start with smaller plan. Something that is easily doable. If you have busy schedule, working out for 1 hour may seem unrealistic to start with. So make workout plan of 20 min or half an hour.
You can start with simple home workout. All you need is a pair of dumbbell or resistance band. You may begin with body weight work-out too without any equipment.
Are you telling me you do not have 20 min to workout daily?
Well, you can work-out while watching your favorite Netflix series. Or while talking on phone. Or even while making your little one study. Just get up and get started.
And still if you think you cannot manage time, then either you need to learn to manage time. Or you do lack the desire to get fit.
We need to understand that we always make time for things which are important to us. In our mind, consciously or unconsciously, we decide what is important and choose accordingly.
Have look at your to-do list once and observe. You have made place for everything that you think is important.
You may even visit a party which you wouldn’t really enjoy. Why? Because you think it is important for your promotion. So you see, you always choose what to do and what not to do.
When you way yes to something, you are saying no to something else.
If you say yes to scrolling on your phone, you are saying no to hundred of other options you have to spend your time productively.
Choose what to do wisely.

Set weekly goal
As you begin with your fitness routine, there shall be lot of disturbances and diversions. Some day you come late from office or someday your child falls ill, there will always be something which can’t be avoided.
And it’s okay. Remember when life throws lemons, you make a lemonade. So take a deep breath and relax. It’s ok if you do not work-out as you had planned. What you can do is, inculcate some physical activities that day in your daily routine.
Get down few stops before your bus stop and walk home. Take stairs. Clean your house. Do something that will make your body more than usual.
It is better to set weekly goals than daily goals. So you can start with goal of 2-3 hours per week instead of half hour workout daily and adjust the daily schedule accordingly. So if you could not achieve your half hour workout today, you can walk an extra mile on your weekend.
Working out 3-4 days per week is great way to start. You need to come out of “all or nothing” mindset. Think like this – Something better than nothing. And you will see yourself doing small actions that sum up to bigger habits eventually.

Workout buddy
Having an accountability partner or Coach goes long way in holding yourself accountable. We all fail at times. And it’s absolutely human to fail. What matters is how you handle that failure and bounce back.
Some get back on their own while some need to be held. Coach or a partner shall hold you tight on those tough days. Seek one and you will get one for sure.

Track your progress
Keep tracking your progress. You may track it on paper or in apps. Tracking shall keep you grounded.
One, you will be motivated to see yourself growing. It also gives direction to make improvements.
Two, every time you go off-track, you need not restart from beginning but you can start from where you stopped.
Be proud of your achievements
Every small achievement shall make you proud and keep you motivated. Flaunt your small victories on instagram stories. You shall hear that applause to keep you going. Tag me on my instagram handle – Evolve for better life and you shall hear me cheer loud for you.
Do not quit
Yes, this is most important thing. Building any habit isn’t easy. The biggest hurdle to give up again and again and restart from the beginning. Every time you think of quitting, tell yourself that you shall do it for 3 more days and then quit. You know what to do after 3 days, Right?
